So, Twiggs has ALWAYS been the boss mare in our herd. She has never been extremely agressive towards other horses but she would run them off so that she could have her supper first. However, when we brought Lola home, the two mares battled back and forth to figure out who was going to be top dog. They still haven't figured it out. Currently, due to the two extra ponies we have temporarily, I have Twiggs and Lola in a small paddock together. They are best friends until feeding time and they both act like they are trying to dominate the other. It's actually kind of hilarious! Some days, Lola seems to have the upper hand, and other days Twiggs does. However, it never comes to biting or kicking, just pinning ears and giving dirty looks! Watching herd behavior is so fun!
One of the new horses that we have currently is a total B*TCH!! She is so mean when it's close to feeding time. She will actually charge the other horses in the field to make sure no one comes close to the gate until she has had her grain. She kicks, shows her teeth, bucks, charges, anything you can think of, she does! It's so aggravating not to mention dangerous for her, the other horses, and myself if I get in the middle of it! There is no doubt who the boss mare is in that pasture! I'll be glad when she goes to her new boarding barn so Twiggs can reclaim her role as herd leader in that field and everything can go back to normal! I'll try to snap some pictures next time!
